Poverty Alleviation
In combining core business activities with our social commitment to improve community well-being as well as achieving corporate goals, Bayer works to help improve the quality of life of poverty-stricken Chinese farmers with small loans and agricare training.
Microfinance
Bayer has been working with Mercy Corps, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation as well as other corporations since 2003 to provide farmers in Fujian and Guizhou provinces with small loans and training sessions on vital skills such as crop protection, as an effort to help the farmers achieve sustainable progress in improving their standards of living. More than 6,000 farmers, herdersman and fishermen have benefited so far in Fu'an, Fujian and Liuzhi Special District, Guizhou.
Bayer's participation enables the microfinancing program to leverage Bayer's core business competencies such as Bayer CropScience's advanced technology and experience in Agricare to help farmers increase crop yield and thereby raise their disposable income. In late Spring 2006, Bayer CropScience specilists offered a training course in Liuzhi titled "Identify, Prevent and Treat Major Plant Diseases and Pests for Corn and Rice". This course trained local farmers on plant protection technology and instructed them on the safe use of agrichemical products.
