Bayer has a long tradition of commitment to sports, at the heart of which is our support of soccer. Bayer China carries forward that tradition in China, providing underprivileged students in China a platform for team sports and positive community involvement.
Soccer-in-a-Box
"Soccer-in-a-Box" was launched by the initiation of Bayer China in 2004 as an innovative way to contribute to the rural community via promoting sports, education and the spirit of teamwork among school age children in underdeveloped areas of China. In three years, the program brought 617 boxes containing soccer equipment to schools in poverty-stricken areas of Yunnan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Hebei, Jilin and Xinjiang. At any given time, more than 7,000 underprivileged children in China are enjoying healthy, team sports on the field through "Soccer-in-a-Box" program and are engaged in positive community involvement.
The "Soccer-in-a-box" kit contains everything a school needs to start and train a soccer team: 12 complete soccer uniforms, 12 sets of soccer socks and shin guards, eight soccer balls, 10 practice cones, one stop watch and soccer training manuals. "Soccer-in-a-Box" also encourages exchange between students in rural and poverty-stricken areas of China and corporate partners like Bayer and DHL, international schools, as well as children and families located in Beijing and Shanghai who have been supporting the Program. Bayer employees and families join student teams from rural China and youth from the international communities of Beijing and Shanghai on the fields each year to facilitate friendly soccer matches. Celebrity athletes present, volunteers and soccer players together represent over 40 countries.
Beginning 2008, the "Soccer-in-a-Box" initiative will focus to incorporate the dedication of Bayer employee volunteers to improve sports education and spread the Olympics spirit among the urban underprivileged children.
